These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to obtain john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Existing third-level names remained active.
